Firefighters from the Winchendon MA Fire Department came up with a great solution when faced with a kitten trapped in a sewer grate. The 1-year-old cat somehow got into a drainage ditch during a heavy rainstorm. As it tried to escape, its head got stuck in a fence, leaving it hanging in mid-air fighting for its life.

The poor cat was having difficulty breathing and would undoubtedly die unless the firefighters took quick action. Firefighters immediately got to work and quickly attached the cat to the entire grate. They then turned the grate sideways and helped support the distressed cat while they found the best way to free it without causing injury and further pain.

Fortunately, these kind workers soon saw a quick and easy solution. When the cat's owner showed up at the scene, the warm-hearted firefighter told her to go home and bring her some soap. When the cat's owner returned with the soap, the firefighters applied a smooth soap to the cat's neck and gently released the head from the grate, much to the delight of everyone on the scene.

Aside from looking dazed and wet, the kitten did not appear to suffer any ill effects after the traumatic event. Hopefully it will learn from this experience and not venture into the gutters again as it hangs around. If the cat really had 9 lives, it now only has 8. This happy ending was all in a day's work for the firefighters and made for great news for the department's Facebook page. This is definitely a life-turner for rescuing a trapped cat. Cats aren't the only animals that have trouble with heavy rains. If you encounter an animal in trouble, try to help them.
