"Daily Mail" reported that Porter has agreed to take over the Swedish national team.

Porter, who was sacked by West Ham United in September, expressed a desire to take over as manager of the Swedish national team after the Swedish Football Association parted ways with Thomasson on Tuesday.

Negotiations are progressing rapidly, and Porter is willing to accept a six-month short-term contract with the task of saving the team's World Cup journey. If the coaching results are satisfactory, both parties will have the opportunity to renew the contract.

Porter was sacked after just eight months in charge of West Ham United, and his real coaching career began in Sweden. From 2011 to 2018, he led ร–stersund from Sweden's fourth tier to the top flight and won the Swedish Cup in 2017. Since then, he has coached Swansea and Brighton, and took over as Chelsea coach in 2022, but was fired again seven months later.

Sweden fired coach Tomasson after losing 0-1 at home to Kosovo in Monday's World Cup qualifying match. Despite having a front line of Liverpool's Isak and Arsenal's Jokeres, Sweden only drew with Slovenia in the first three rounds of the group stage and lost to Switzerland and Kosovo.

They return to action in three weeks and must defeat Slovenia and Switzerland to qualify for the World Cup play-offs next March.

Porter was considered to take over the national team in 2023, but voluntarily withdrew because he was unwilling to return to the coaching bench prematurely after leaving Stamford Bridge.

But in interviews with Swedish media this week, Porter seemed to demonstrate his qualifications for the position. He said: "I am in Sweden at the moment, in my Swedish residence, currently in a gap period, having just left the Premier League. As long as I feel that I can help, I am open to any opportunity, and the Swedish national team coach position is very attractive."

"I am only 50 years old, and I still have a lot to give. The key is not to find a job at a specific level, but to find a platform where I can exert influence and help. At the same time, I hope that all parties involved have the same philosophy. This is my standard."
