BBC: Crystal Palace accepted an informal offer of 35 million pounds to Guy, Liverpool was surprised
Guy's joining Liverpool fell through at the last moment of the transfer window, and BBC reporter Sami Mokbel posted a post to reveal some of the behind-the-scenes situations of the deal.
Liverpool considered signing Guy last summer but ultimately failed to advance the deal. The Reds believe that Guy can partner with Van Dijk with central defender. Given that the latter will be 35 years old in July next year, they will also find a successor for this. At the end of last season, Liverpool made it privately that they wanted to sign Guy, a decision that was partly because Konath's future is still unclear, and the player's contract will expire next summer and has not yet agreed to renew it.
Therefore, Liverpool decided to negotiate with Crystal Palace this summer, rather than waiting until the 2026 Guy contract expires. They know that Crystal Palace president Parrish is a tough negotiator. Guy failed to transfer to Newcastle last summer, and he rejected the offer of up to £65 million. However, Kanssa's transfer to Leverkusen prompted Liverpool's decision to take action against Guy. The contact began in the second week of August, and it happened to be the second day of the two teams' community shield game. Crystal Palace won the championship through a penalty shootout. Before the game, there were signs that Liverpool might take this opportunity to finalize Guy's deal, but it is understood that no substantial dialogue occurred. After Crystal Palace won, Parish publicly stated that he had to consider giving up the sale of Guy, considering Guy's contract, which opened the door for Liverpool's contact. According to sources, when Liverpool started contact, they made an informal offer of £35 million. To Liverpool's surprise, Crystal Palace accepted it, which made the Reds' concern that the original negotiations had become difficult became unnecessary.
In fact, Liverpool Sports Director Richard Hughes is said to have even begun preparing to get trade approval from Fenway, as preliminary negotiations look very smooth and the rest is waiting for parish approval. But Liverpool waited and waited, and neither side was willing to take the next step. Liverpool thinks their offer is fair, and Crystal Palace obviously doesn't agree. In the end, the offer was not officially accepted and the negotiations were deadlocked.
