Foden: I hope to win the Club World Cup. Guardiola has strict requirements on details. I want to be a teammate with Maradona.
As Manchester City is about to compete for the World Club World Cup in the Global Stage, Foden talks about his expectations for his trip to the United States, what makes Coach Guardiola special, and the family atmosphere behind the club's success.
How much do you expect to participate in the Club World Cup? What is your goal?
I am very excited. It was a brand new experience for us, something we had never experienced before. This will be the best team from around the world. Obviously, we want to win the championship, but my personal goal is to enjoy the game, compete with the best players, and try to play to your best.
What do you think the atmosphere of the game will be like?
I hope the atmosphere is very good, and I believe it will be very warm. I'm looking forward to playing at different venues. See those stadiums, fans, fight against the best teams…that’s what you want to do. This is an opportunity to experience different things in life.
You will face some opponents you have never met before. How will you deal with this situation?
I look forward to meeting new teams and seeing their style. I believe this will be interesting for fans too. Each team has its own style and philosophy. I look forward to meeting this challenge.
How motivating will this be for you to win the first championship in this event?
We've discussed this issue and it would be great to be the first name on the trophy. This is definitely our goal, and with the strength in our team, I believe we are fully capable of doing this.
You have grown up at Manchester City since childhood. How do you describe your connection with the club?
I think this connection is unique. Few players have been going all the way from the youth training system, playing in the first team for many years and winning many trophies. We are like a big family. I think we have built that feeling at Etihad Stadium, as united as a family.
Another youth training graduate who performed well this season is 20-year-old Nico O'Reilly. Why is he so exciting?
He has a very good attitude. He is a very humble person and never complacent. When I observed him during training, I could see how eager he was to learn and improve. He will observe old team members, learn their professional spirit, and learn from them. The coach will not let the player play for no reason, so he definitely deserves this opportunity. He has good physical fitness on the court. Although he is a midfielder, he has also played as a left-back and has performed very well, which fully demonstrates how hard he works. He is a top player.
Guardiola is known for his outstanding tactical abilities. In this regard, what do you think is outstanding?
His attention to details is always very good. He can tell you how far you move half a yard, which can have a huge impact when creating opportunities or scoring goals. It is these subtleties that he can grasp just the right amount every time.
Finally, if you had the option to play with any football player in history, who would you choose?
could be Diego Maradona. When I watched his great highlights on YouTube, I could see the ball seemed to stick to his feet, and all his goals in the World Cup. I really want to see how he performs in training and understand what kind of person he is.
